Kulturskaparna (the Creators of Culture) is a network devoted to influencing public opinion and collaborating on copyright issues. The network was formed to change the fact that authors and performing artists have not made their voices heard in the public debate on the arts and its conditions on the Internet.
The 25 organisations in the network together represent all fields of the arts with over 50,000 professional authors, visual artists, composers, actors, directors, dancers, musicians, journalists and the Swedish authors and performing artists affiliated with the copyright organisations.
Why Kulturskaparna?
The Internet has created fantastic opportunities for spreading culture to people. Never before have films, music, literature, art and everything else that culture has to offer been as readily available. Therefore, encountering culture on the Internet should be easy and financially reasonable, while providing the creators of culture with remuneration for their work. It must be possible to work professionally with your art even in the future and this requires a well-functioning copyright system. Kulturskaparna believes that professionalism in the arts promotes the diversity and quality of the cultural amenities.
We believe
- that the internet and file-sharing technology provide wonderful opportunities for spreading culture to people. Nevertheless, today’s forms for file sharing means that creators of culture often fail to be compensated for their efforts, when their works are used without receiving any remuneration. This will lessen people’s chances to experience cultural diversity, innovation and quality in the future. Therefore, we promote user-friendly forms of remuneration to creators of culture when culture is distributed on the internet, e.g. licence solutions offering good conditions for the creators of culture.
- that it should be easy and financially reasonable to use culture on the internet in a way that ensures remuneration for the creators of culture. We are solution minded and recognise the development of various agreement models, including legal streaming services and new extended collective licensing possibilities in the legislation.
The collaboration started in summer 2009
The Swedish Joint Committée for Artistic and Literary Professionals (KLYS) took the initiative in creating Kulturskaparna summer 2009. The 25 organisations representing creators of culture decided to initiate collaborations on copyright issues at a general meeting on 23 June 2009. All of the participating organisations have helped form the guidelines of the new network.
The participating organisations are listed below.
Working methods, funding and spokespersons
Kulturskaparna’s work is managed through various teams with a managerial body coordinating the work. A larger group of representatives from all of the participating organisations meets regularly, about once a month, to set the agenda.
The network’s activities are fully financed by the participating organisations.
The network is represented officially by five spokespersons, each representing their own artistic field within Kulturskaparna: words, images, tones and stage/moving pictures.
